We Source Responsibly From the Start

Practicing Handcrafted Sustainability

Our roasting company is a work in progress, and it always will be. Something that may have been the best option last year may not be as good as the options that exist now. The reality of constant change is why we say we “practice” handcrafted sustainability. We are continuously learning, experimenting and embracing the fact that as we change and grow, and as the industry and world changes and grows, we should evaluate, test and refine our own operating methods and processes.

We say we “handcraft” our sustainability because we’d always rather move quickly and do it ourselves than wait for so-called experts to tell us how we should be operating. Whether it’s the type of packaging we use to ship coffee, the cleaning supplies we purchase, or how we can reuse instead of dispose, our team is continuously working to learn and improve the way we do business.

Sustainability is more than just a marketing gimmick or trend at DOMA Coffee. It’s ingrained into the soul of this place. We believe in being a great partner to all the people and places that are impacted by our operation and the physical environment we impact is hugely important to us. We do our best to make our presence as much of a positive as possible.

Sourcing and Relationships

“Direct-Trade” is a term that gets tossed around a lot in the coffee industry. It can be mean a pretty wide range of things depending on who you talk to. For us, direct-trade means we are purchasing coffee that we specifically selected directly from the producer of that coffee without the use of an importing partner or any other intermediaries. This would be like going to the farmers market and buying tomatoes directly from the people who grew those tomatoes. Totally doable if you live in a place where tomatoes grow and if there’s a farmers market close by where you can make that purchase. With coffee, it gets a little trickier. We don’t feel very strongly about direct-trade here. It gets a bit more press than it probably should and it gets held up as the ideal sourcing arrangement a bit more than it probably should.

We value consistent quality and responsible, ethical operating practices a lot more than direct-trade relationships. Just as we practice handcrafted sustainability, we want to work with producing partners who share the values of sustainability and ethical business practices. The ability of a producer to provide the quality and type of coffee we need, year after year, harvest after harvest, is equally important. That is what ensures the quality of the drink that you enjoy. We select partners who we respect and trust and who can provide great coffees and then we commit to long-term working relationships with them. This allows our partners to invest with confidence in the betterment of their communities and their farming operations.

Quality, Consistency and Innovation

As a specialty coffee roaster, we exclusively source high quality coffees. Not exactly unique in the world of specialty coffees but it’s the foundation that our operation is built on. The coffee we source ranges from “very good” to “exceptional” with the occasional “weird” “experimental” and “mind-blowing” added to keep things interesting.

Our blends are designed for consistent quality and taste. Workhorse, daily-driver, crowd-pleasers. These are all good descriptors for what the blends are intended to be. Some of them land in the medium-roast category and some land in darker-roast category.

Our single-origin program changes throughout the year as specific origins and regions within a country come in and out of season. The coffees we showcase through this program are selected because of their unique quality and representation of the region they come from. This is a fun rabbit hole to go down and is part of the reason why we operate our coffee lab at the roastery… a place for people to come in and explore the depth of coffee’s nuance and possibility. These coffees are usually roasted to a lighter level. Just enough for the development of the ideal flavors that highlight what is amazing about these coffees.

In addition to the single-origin coffees we feature, we also produce very small-batch unique coffees of exceptional quality. We call this our Limited Edition program. This is where the truly amazing and occasionally experimental coffees fit. Innovative producers experiment with the processing of the coffees they grow, or they raise unique or heirloom varieties in small lots. We love to find these and share them with the DOMA Coffee audience.

For all of our offerings, our quality control team tests every batch we roast to ensure the product we send out meets our standards and expectations. Our roasting is designed to showcase the quality of the coffees we source. Great coffee doesn’t need to be over roasted or covered up.

Brewing a Great Cup

After all the work in sourcing and roasting coffee, we hand it off to you. Some coffees you’ll love, some may not be your favorite. That’s okay, taste is highly subjective and finding the coffee you enjoy the most right now is a fun process. We are happy to share our recommended brew recipes to help you succeed in making a great cup of coffee. To support that, we provide coffee education, have an incredibly knowledgeable staff, and carry some of our favorite brewing equipment in the DOMA Coffee Lab. We want you to have a great coffee experience and enjoy the process as much as we do.
