The new Summer Lovin’ label has us dreaming of our best lake days. It encases a dreamy blend of Papua New Guinea and Brazil coffees, hitting notes of bergamot, lemon and dried apricot. This month we spoke with artist Em Deane Kelley of Locals Creative about her label design for this coffee, what’s on her mind this summer, and how she hopes to grow as an artist.
DOMA: Em, it has been a pleasure to see your designs for our last two limited-edition artist coffees as the first year-round artist for DOMA. What was the inspiration behind your third and final label for Summer Lovin’?
Em: Through the art I wanted to give a feeling of blissful nostalgia and an ode to Moosehead Lake, a place special for my family where I spend my summers. Growing up in western Maine, spending summers on the lake is just what you did. To me, the simple joys of tossing a stick for my 13-year-old husky mix, Pico, hoping to see a moose around each corner, and waking up in a tent bring me back to being a kid. I hope this art can inspire some childlike wonder and a breath of fresh air.
DOMA: What are a few elements that make for the perfect lake day, for you?
Em: A summer lake day for me is filled with sunshine, family and my dog by my side. Whether it's enjoying the public docks on Donner Lake or jumping in Moosehead mid-work day, time in the sun and in the water truly feeds my soul.
DOMA: Aside from jumping in the lake, how do you plan to continue to grow as an artist this summer?
Em: I hope to create more art for myself and others to enjoy in their homes, on the go, or somewhere in between. This partnership with DOMA has allowed me to freely create in a way that is outside my norm, as I typically am designing brands for others (which I love dearly). I hope to use this experience as a jumping off point to continue storytelling about my love for nature and protecting the planet through my art in new ways.
DOMA: Any fun updates on your business, Locals Creative, this summer?
Em: I recently launched a new venture alongside one of my dearest friends, talented photographer and fellow POW Creative Alliance Member, Holly Shankland. Holly and I have created a retreat for female business owners, creatives, freelancers and dreamers who are seeking both relaxation, creativity and connection. We just successfully wrapped up our first sold-out retreat at Constellation Creek and launched our next retreat at the beautiful Heartwood Mendocino for Fall 2025. I look forward to continuing to help facilitate these beautiful, powerful and raw conversations with fellow creatives and like-minded women and can’t wait to see where it goes! DOMA: How might your art for Summer Lovin’ speak to the theme of connection?
Em: Summer is a season of connection for me–with nature, with people and with myself. While time outside and socializing ramp up, I try to take a little more time for myself to do what makes me most happy–sipping coffee on the dock, mountain biking, hitting the farmers’ market—or, better yet, my mom’s garden—and making memories around a campfire with my family. Maine is so beautiful and has so many special places that still feel untouched, which makes it easy to feel connected with nature. From the lake to our favorite small coastal times, the slower pace I seek out when back in the 207 truly fills my cup.
DOMA: What has it been like to connect with DOMA Coffee this year?
Em: I am so grateful for the opportunity. Working with a brand like DOMA who shares a passion for advocating for the outdoors makes me extremely proud. My creative work and love for the outdoors has truly connected me with some amazing brands, humans and friends. To combine my love for coffee and to push myself to think of myself as an artist was an incredible experience.
DOMA: Where can you be spotted out in the wild this summer?
Em: The last few years has evolved into an annual road trip from California back to Maine, all so our dog Pico can come. In addition to Maine this summer, my husband and I will be heading to Norway to the Lofoten Islands. We will be spending a few weeks exploring the region, camping in a van and soaking in every moment in the arctic circle.
DOMA: Em, thanks for sharing your creativity and art with DOMA over the past year!
