SUSTAINABILITY AT DOMA

when we started this company, we decided that we wanted to create a long project that was much bigger than coffee.  we've gotten lots of patronizing "yeah, that's nice," along with plenty of blank stares.  for us, that means we're doing some things right.  in 2000, our goal was to be an environmentally sound company.  it started out somewhat simple, trying to reduce our footprint, reuse whatever material possible and recycle the rest.  in 2005, a field trip to the local transfer station with our children's school really set us on course.  so, rather than complain, we decided to do something about it.

BIG THINGS

we purchase certified organic, fair trade and direct relationship coffees.  we're committed to providing the growers and harvesters with a sustainable living wage, often paying much higher prices than those established by transfair usa.

The Loring smartroaster S35 has been installed.  Besides giving us some of the best coffee we have tasted, this new, high-tech roaster uses 80% less gas than conventional roasters.  This will allow us to reduce our annual carbon dioxide output by about 39,000lbs.

OTHER STUFF

continue to reduce, reuse and recycle in more efficient and effective ways.
all new print material will use soy-based ink on 100% recycled paper
cleaning materials toxin free.
all paper products such as toilet paper/paper towels are produced from 100% recycled paper (seventh generation)
shredded office paper for all packaging/shipping
continue saving/recycling/composting coffee grounds and all roaster waste
donate leftover coffee to various charitable organizations
all lighting is low voltage energy efficient
all music is on vinyl

BIGGER THINGS

retail packaging in cans (recyclable and reusable)
retail space in roastery (to encourage recycling / reuse of cans)
hybrid / alternative energy vehicle (mercedes wagon donation anyone?)

and BIGGER ER

green building
alternative energy powered (solar, wind, geothermal)
community gardens
combining all elements above
architect (senior thesis project - university of idaho) in progress

utility companies (thank you Avista)

it's the right and left thing to do.

kurt vonnegut said it best......

"...the epitaph for the planet, i remember, which he said should be carved in big letters in a wall of the grand canyon for the flying saucer people to find, was this:
'we could have saved it but we were too doggone cheap.'"
