DESCRIPTION: Kenya is one of the finest coffee growing regions in Africa. A combination of high altitude, abundant rainfall and cool nights gives a perfect environment for producing the highest quality beans. Combine this with highly skilled farmers and meticulous quality control and you can get some of the most sought after coffees on the planet.
The best coffees from Kenya are sold in small lots via an auction system where fierce competition drives the price up for the top quality lots. Finding a great Kenya involves cupping hundreds of coffees each year to find that one perfect lot. This year we found that perfect coffee from Gichathaini.
Gichathaini is a farmer-owned washing station (known as a "factory" in Kenya) located on the Southern side of Mount Kenya National Park. Smallholder producers bring their coffee cherries here for processing. It is one of three stations that make up the Gikanda Farmers' Cooperative Society. The farmers who process coffee at each station elect representatives who participate in management of the cooperative. Gichathaini is one of most organized and advanced small farmer groups in Kenya.
